From energy at sea to healthcare equipment: grant for FEB research into logistics to improve society

14 December 2018

Researchers in the department of Operations Management & Operations Research at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) have been awarded a national grant for two large research projects. These two studies fall within the NWO (Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research)/Dinalog Integrator program that focuses on the role of logistics in facilitating the improvement of society. The FEB researchers are involved in a study into generating energy at sea, as well as research into innovative applications in the logistics of healthcare equipment.

Wind energy at sea

The project about service logistics for ‘offshore energy’ is in line with current FEB research into wind energy at sea. New to this research, however, is the broader and more long-term perspective regarding the transition from fossil fuels, such as oil and gas, to wind energy. The FEB researchers involved are Jasper Veldman, Onur Alper Kilic and Ruud Teunter. The aim is to also take on two PhD students. Including the contributions from the five industry partners, Groningen Seaports, NAM, ORTEC, Peterson and Siemens Gamesa, the total budget of this project adds up to € 1 million.

The logistics of healthcare equipment

The second project concerns innovative applications in the logistics of healthcare equipment such as beds, hoists, wheelchairs and mattresses. The consortium focusing on this project is made up of a large number of parties involved in healthcare, with TNO (the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research) as the coordinator. The researchers will conduct a pilot study at care provider Rivas Zorggroep in collaboration with healthcare equipment provider Vegro and under the leadership of Paul Buijs and Taco van der Vaart from the FEB and Erik Buskens from the UMCG. The total project budget amounts to € 1 million.
