Education Why UG?

Studying in Groningen

Groningen is a lively student-city with around 50,000 (international) students. It’s no wonder then that the city’s slogan is “Nothing tops Groningen” (in Dutch: “Er gaat niets boven Groningen”). The high student population in Groningen brings the average age of the town down to 36; this makes Groningen the youngest city in the Netherlands. With one in four people being a student, there are a lot of festivals and events in the city such as the ESN introduction week geared towards students and our bars have no official closing times. #NothingTopsGroningen

Our university buildings are situated all around Groningen and the city’s surroundings. Our 11 faculties are based in 150 different buildings around the city. Depending on your studies, you might have class at the Grote Markt or near the Noorderplatsoen. Our students live all over the entire city as well. #TheCityIsOurCampus

Groningen is a cultural town. The city organises unique festivals like Noorderzon and music festival Eurosonic Noorderslag. The 85-year-old University Museum and the modern Groninger museum offer free entrance for students. The city theatre (“stadschouwburg”) has existed for more than 130 years and is considered one of the best theatres in the Netherlands. For those who love culture, there’s always something to do in Groningen where theatre, film, music and the arts are concerned.

A lot of students are active in student associations outside of their studies. Groningen has something for everyone, ranging from sports associations to political-, cultural- and study associations. These student associations are a lot of fun and give you experiences you’ll remember your entire life.
