Organised in the beautiful city of Groningen, in the North of the Netherlands, this unique winter school is devoted to storytelling and the study of narrative. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, with participants from business, journalism, psychology, the arts, literature, theology, philosophy, coaching, politics, and any other field in which storytelling and narrative play a role, we will discuss how narratives are both informed and shaped by, as well as transmitters of values.

The context for the winter school is the growing interest in narrative fiction as an ‘experimental values laboratory’ and the fact that outside the academy, storytelling has become the focus of attention in many professional practices, such as psychology, counselling, medicine and health, and journalism. In such practices, narrative is used as a tool to piece together broken lives and make sense out of chaos and destruction. Narrative thus appears to be everywhere.

The winter school is devoted to studying these many forms and shapes of narrative in a wide variety of media and settings (film, literature, art, journalism, education). Lecturers and speakers form an impressive, international line-up of leading narratologists (including Marina Grishakova, Hanna Meretoja, Liesbeth Korthals Altes, Stefan Iversen, Marco Caracciolo, Luc Herman, Bart Vervaeck and Jan Baetens).

Organized in affiliation with the Literature and Change in Europe (LACE) network, this intensive, week-long programme also pays attention to the dangers of storytelling. We will be offering participants an enticing week that includes a one day symposium on the negotiation of values in narrative, with keynotes inspired by recent work by Liesbeth Korthals Altes.
