Research Methodology & STATA
The summer school on research methodology is designed for researchers in social science and management. The goal of the summer school is to give participants the skills to define and develop a finite and ‘doable’ research question. In addition, participants will learn how to match data and methodology to a particular research question. The methodologies which will be focussed on in this summer school will be quantitative and we will use the statistical software program STATA throughout. While some background in STATA is useful, it is not necessary and an introduction/refresher to STATA will be provided.
We will learn data habits that will help us revise our work efficiently and make it replicable. Larger teams of researchers, and more complex datasets that are used for multiple projects imply the need for better documentation and better organization of data and analyses. We will learn to implement and interpret some commonly used statistical/econometric techniques. To achieve this, we focus on examples where country, firm level, team/village/community or individual level data are common units of analysis. We will discuss all aspects of data work, for example, what the best folder structure is, good habits like separating data creation files from analysis files (so that we do not change data while running estimations making our work un-replicable). We will learn how to work efficiently and accurately during the initial stages of the research process when we go from raw data to data that can be analysed. The in-class learning experience includes a field excursion where we will practice data collection skills in a rural setting in a selected area surrounding our host university.
This summer school will take place on the beautiful Amritapuri campus of Amrita University, Amritapuri situated in the backwaters of Kerala, India. Bringing together participants from Europe, the United States and India, we hope to learn together in this scenic and serene environment.
