Course information

Target group

This course is intended for young art historians aiming at a career in academia, museums and cultural institutions, and for professionals who have already entered those fields.

Level requirements

Participants are expected to have a BA in Art History or a neighbouring field.
(e.g. Cultural History, Cultural Studies, History, Media Studies, Museum Studies, Religious Studies, with a demonstrable focus on the visual arts)


The summer school programme will start on 8 July and end on 14 July.
The course schedule comprises lectures, discussions, a day excursion around the Netherlands, the meeting and working with curators, and the designing of an exhibition.

Learning outcomes

After this course you are able to:

  1. Engage with recent theories and methods of an object centered art history
  2. Employ theoretical knowledge and practical skills for a curatorial career
  3. Bridge conventional boundaries between art and science, chronological periods, traditional genres, craft, and design as well as material and visual culture
Course load + certificate

The course represents a workload of 84 hours, including preparatory work. After successful completion of the summer school, a certificate of attendance will be awarded.

Language requirements

It is expected that the participants have a sufficient command of the English language to actively participate in the discussions and to present their own work in English .
