Target group

This summer school is intended for BA, MA and PhD students. Prior knowledge of the field of intercultural communication is preferred, yet, not necessary.
It is expected that the participants have a sufficient command of the English language to actively participate in the discussions and to present their own work in English .


On Sunday 30 June we will start off the summer school with a city tour and welcoming drinks (starting time: 3PM).
The summer school programme will start on Monday 1 July 2019 and end on Friday 5 July 2019.

Sessions will begin at 09:00 and finish at 17:00 with the exception of Wednesday (the third session will last until 12:00).

Learning outcomes

After this course you will be able to:

  • Better understand the differences between cultural stereotypes and cultural generalizations.
  • Recognize and deploy different styles of communication.
  • Gain a theoretical understanding of intercultural competence development.
  • Gain a deeper insight into your own culture.


Beth Yoder is a Senior Trainer at the Intercultural Communication Section of the Language Centre (University of Groningen). She has joined the IC section from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where she was (and continues to be) a Managing Partner with Global Teams. She has been facilitating intercultural learning and development for individuals and organizations for over 20 years and has lived in six countries, and worked in many more, providing training and designing learning for adults – from college students to C-level executives.

Workload + certificate

The training consists of 36 hours of professional development.

Upon successful completion of the program, the Summer School offers a Certificate of Attendance that mentions the workload of 36 hours (28 hours corresponds to 1 ECTS). Students can apply for recognition of these credits to the relevant authorities in their home institutions, therefore the final decision on awarding credits is at the discretion of their home institutions. We will be happy to provide any necessary information that might be requested in addition to the certificate of attendance.

The fee includes participation in the programme and coffee/tea.
