Career Awareness 13 February 2018
The Federation of Graduate Schools in Social Sciences and Humanities is offering a career perspectives event on Career Awareness. You only recently started your PhD project, but time flies and before you know it, you will need to decide on the next steps in your career. What to do after you finish your PhD project? Would you like to stay in academia to become a researcher or maybe eventually a professor? Or would you like to apply your knowledge and skills in policy making, an NGO, industry, or another comparable environment? In this career perspectives event you will explore your options, strengths, and interests for your future career.
The programme of this Career Awareness event is divided into two parts. First, the facts and figures about the career prospects of PhD students will be discussed, and reflections on career choices will be given by two presenters who finished a PhD project and then either stayed in academia or chose a job outside academia.
In the second half of the programme it’s your turn: in workshops you will work on your own career options and preferences. More information can be found in the detailed overview of the programme.
During this event, you can participate in two out of three workshops that are offered:
Diversity and empowerment
You’re at the start of your career. In this workshop we will reflect on possible career paths (inside and outside academia), and how gender can influence your choices for career moves. The goal is to make you more conscious of stereotypes that may play a role in your career, and their impact on your choices and those of the people around you.
Next century skills
This workshop will focus on your own strengths and interests. You will gain more insight in the general skills that will be useful to develop. There will be a short lecture and a small group meeting.
As you may already experience now, during your PhD, a career is exciting and interesting, but can also be rather demanding. Sometimes, due to your passion and devotion to the job, it can be hard to find enough time to relax. How do you make sure you keep a balanced life so that you will keep up your energy and enjoy your career? What are alarming signals and what can you do to prevent yourself from getting (on the edge of) a Burnout? Work Life Balance offers you a quick overview and practical tips.
You will need to prepare for the workshops by making an assignment.
This event is open for PhD students who are in their first or second year of their PhD project, and who are a member of one of the Graduate Schools of the Federation or Campus Fryslân. The event will take place at Het Kasteel
(Melkweg 1, Groningen city centre) on Tuesday February 13, 2018, 13:00 – 17:00 (drinks afterwards). For this event no costs are charged. You can register by filling in the registration form.
