Why the Honours College?

Are you a student who likes to show initiative, is perpetually curious about the world and ready to engage with the new and the unknown? Do you want to further develop your talents as part of an exciting group of young people across the various university faculties through interdisciplinary teamwork? Do you have a keen interest in working on creative solutions with your fellow students and providing and receiving feedback from your peers? If this appeals to you and you think that this programme would be a good fit for you, then we encourage you to apply for a place within the Honours College.

The Honours programme is designed for students who want to get more out of themselves and their time at the University of Groningen. This makes the programme especially interesting for:

  1. students who have the potential and the willingness to do more than in their regular degree programme;
  2. students who are eager to engage with new challenges and the ambition to come to creative solutions and explore the unknown;
  3. students who would like to work together and collaborate with students from other fields and faculties;
  4. students who take an active role in classes and want to learn how to provide and receive feedback to and from peers.

The Benefits

Students in the programme all report having experienced an added value in finding a group of like-minded students from across the university whom they would otherwise never have met and that they have come to count among their closest friends.

As an Honours student, you get the opportunity to participate in intensive hands-on small-group teaching of like-minded and motivated students from a wide range of (cultural) backgrounds, and across (faculty) disciplines. The classes are scheduled in the evenings (mostly up to two per week from Monday through Thursday). The weeks with Honours classes may not be the same as the class and exam weeks in your faculty.

This programme is offered almost free of costs. You don’t have to pay extra tuition fees and almost no costs for study materials like books. A contribution to the summer school (between year 2 and 3) is requested for ⅓ of the costs (between 100 and 550 euros).

Once you have completed the Honours Programme, this will be mentioned on your Bachelor's Diploma Supplement. Please note, this is not the same as a cum laude distinction. You will also receive a letter of recommendation from the Dean of the Honours College, and our honours medal.
