The development of successful new products, processes and/or services is a challenge for many companies. Innovation processes are complex, and many stakeholders within and outside the company are involved. In this module the management of innovation is being taught, approaching the subject from different perspectives: strategy, management & organization, marketing, knowledge, etc.
How Evolutionary Product Development can Map the Status Quo and Future of a Product
The concept of Evolutionary Product Development opens up the possibility to analyse the relationships between different fields of industrial design, such as ergonomics, marketing, construction and styling. The styling of a product can be analysed in relation to its functionality, its ergonomic qualities, its production technology and the marketing techniques that are used to sell the product.
To demonstrate this, six qualitative product phases are proposed – performance, optimization, itemization, segmentation, individualization, and awareness. Placed in chronological order, a more or less general pattern reveals itself, enabling the possibility of explaining and predicting – to some extent – a product’s future design. When using the Evolutionary Product Development method it is essential to also understand how a product developed over time.
The historical development of a product can be mapped in a family tree that depicts the evolutionary relations. In order to achieve a better understanding of this development, the situational context has to be researched as well. This context is visualized by means of an ecosystem. Based on the future ecosystem, a picture can be sketched of influences on the product that is to be designed, e.g. by analyzing demographic shifts (such as population aging) or legislation changes (such as the banning of incandescent lamps).
The family tree and the ecosystem together form the product evolution diagram. Understanding how products came about, what influenced their development, and the elements that will influence their development in the near future, is instrumental to Evolutionary Product Development. In his lecture professor Eger will elaborate on the product phases and on the product evolution diagram.
Plastics and plastics processing
This first part of the two-part-series on plastics and plastics processing will cover a general introduction into polymers. After this we will go into material selection, including structure-property relations, before finishing this masterclass on the topic of functional polymeric materials. A guest speaker from Philips, will then contribute the industrial perspective on material selection to complete tonight's masterclass.
In the second part, we will impart expert knowledge on the topics of polymer blends and composites, rheology and processing techniques. To add the industrial perspective to this masterclass, a guest from Philips will speak on the topic of material processing from this perspective.
In this course the students develop an application for an embedded computing platform. Within this course an Arduino development kit is used which consists of an embedded microcontroller, a bread board, analog interfaces and interconnection material. Students, working in groups of two, will use on-line tutorials to become familiar with the platform. Based on that, they will define an application which can be mapped onto the platform and write a project proposal which describes the application, the system (embedded micro controller, sensors + actuators and their interconnection) and provides a planning for implementing the application. After approval by the lecturers, the students can start the implementation. To report on their work, the students are expected to record a demonstration of the project results on a video and submit this to the lecturers.
