Individualized Homework in Science and Math
The aim of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness and didactic benefit of using an individualized homework system by comparing two systems (Webwork, LONCAPA). With these tools instructors create questions which are provided to students online. Students will receive an individualized problem, which means that the basic concepts underpinning the problem are the same, but the variables are different. In this way, they can collaborate, but each student will have to run their own calculations to provide the correct answer. This allows students to collaborate, without copying each other’s work. This project is interesting because it provides an implementation of the flipping the classroom concept and formative assessment; students prepare at home and instructors have an overview of the number of attempts, the answers, etc, making it possible to spot problem areas. These tools are potentially widely useable within the University.
