Harro Meijer is voorzitter van het Groningen Energy and Sustainability Program (GESP), de koepelorganisatie van de RUG waarin alle onderzoek op het gebied van energie en duurzaamheid samenkomt. Meijer is hoogleraar Isotopenfysica bij het Centrum voor Isotopen Onderzoek (CIO) en daarnaast directeur van het natuurwetenschappelijke energieinstituut ESRIG. Het Centrum voor Isotopen Onderzoek aan de RUG heeft een vermaard laboratorium voor koolstof-14 ouderdomsmetingen.

Het voorkomen van de isotopen van de 'gewone' elementen zoals waterstof, zuurstof en koolstof verschilt een klein beetje tussen de materialen waarin ze voorkomen, zoals tussen planten en de lucht waarin ze groeien, en tussen waterdamp in de lucht en de sneeuw die eruit valt. Deze kleine verschillen kunnen een zeer gedetailleerd beeld geven van de herkomst van de broeikasgassen, maar ook van klimaatomstandigheden in het verleden. Beide worden gebruikt door het CIO, voor broeikasgasmetingen op station Lutjewad aan de Waddenkust en op het olie- en gasplatform F3 in de Noordzee. En voor onderzoek naar het verleden van het klimaat door werk op de ijskap van Groenland: Meijer reist daar jaarlijks naar toe om monsters te nemen van een sneeuwlaag die hij daar in 2007 met behulp van een sneeuwkanon maakte. Een dun laagje kunstmatige sneeuw bovenop de enorme ijskap zou hem kunnen helpen de thermometer te ijken waarmee de temperatuur op Groenland tot vele duizenden jaren terug is te meten. "We kunnen daardoor zien hoe vers gevallen sneeuw in de loop der jaren verandert door de tijd en de druk van de sneeuw die erop komt te liggen". De resultaten van dit onderzoeksproject zijn in 2015 gepubliceerd. Meijer slaagt er goed in zijn vakgebied toegankelijk te maken, met lezingen, workshops, blogs en in de media.
