Mladen Popović

Mladen Popović studeerde aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven en Yale University. Sinds september 2017 is hij tevens decaan van de Faculteit Religie, Cultuur en Maatschappij. Popović deed archeologisch onderzoek in Megiddo en Jeruzalem. Hij is directeur van het Qumran Institute van de RUG, dat in Nederland een leidende rol heeft in de bestudering van de Dode Zeerollen. In 2013 was Popović als dé Dode Zeerollen-expert in Nederland gastconservator van de unieke tentoonstelling van de Dode Zeerollen in het Drents Museum.

Eind 2014 ontving Popović een ERC Strating Grant van 1,5 miljoen. Met deze subsidie kan hij zijn baanbrekende onderzoek naar de Dode Zeerollen verder ontwikkelen. Samen met Lambert Schomaker, wetenschappelijk directeur van het Artificial Intelligence Institute van de RUG, wilde Popovic de Dode Zeerollen digitaal analyseren, bekend als 'Digitale paleografie', waarbij gebruik wordt gemaakt van kunstmatige intelligentie en koolstofdatering in combinatie met paleografie (handschriftkunde). Ze geloven dat met zeer geavanceerde technieken voor patroonherkenning en beeldverwerking de individuele schrijvers van de manuscripten kunnen worden geïdentificeerd. Deze kennis zal zorgen voor een beter begrip van de Dode Zeerollen en de cultuur waaruit ze afkomstig zijn. In 2021 ontdekten Popović, prof. Lambert Schomaker en promovendus Maruf Dhali, door analyse van het handschrift met kunstmatige intelligentie, dat de beroemde grote Jesaja-rol door twee schrijvers is geschreven.
