University Teaching Qualification (UTQ)

The University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) is proof of didactic competence for lecturers in academic education. All lecturers at the University of Groningen are required to obtain this qualification. In early 2008, the fourteen Dutch universities signed the Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs/University Teaching Qualification (BKO/UTQ) agreement. Lecturers with a UTQ certificate are considered to be qualified for academic teaching by all participating institutions.

The University of Groningen lecturers must satisfy the following four quality requirements in order to be awarded the UTQ:

  • Design and redesign of teaching
  • Teaching and supervising students
  • Testing and assessment
  • Evaluation

Your skills in these fields will be tested with a UTQ portfolio and a final interview.

The ESI Staff Development section can help lecturers compile their portfolio with courses, assignments, portfolio groups and an individual programme. You will decide in consultation with ESI which form of assistance is best for you. The starting point will always be your own teaching practice. The UTQ programme is drawn up in consultation with you and your faculty. This means that your teaching duties and the skills you have already acquired can be taken into account University of Groningen lecturers.

Duration Once you have registered you will be contacted to make an appointment for an intake interview with an ESI staff member to discuss the design of the programme. You will then draw up a plan with your manager. This will indicate how you wish to acquire or demonstrate the skills required for the UTQ, and how quickly. The UTQ programme must be completed within two years.
