‘Unless we know how to decode other cultures and avoid easy-to-fall-into cultural traps, we are easy prey to misunderstanding, needless conflict, and ultimate failure.’

- Erin Meyer, 2014

In today’s globalized world interaction with people from other cultures is inevitable. In order to communicate effectively, one therefore needs to appreciate the subtle differences in communication patterns, as well as the complex variations in what is considered a good communicator from one country to another. The knowledge of such diversities grants one the ability to convey his or her message more convincingly, preventing unnecessary miscommunication. This course provides an insight into low-context and high-context communication, the former expressed through explicit verbal messages and the latter conveyed through implicit contexts, including gestures, social customs, silence, nuance, or tone of voice. Accordingly, this course identifies strategies for delivering speeches successfully in various cultural settings, accompanied by easy-to-understand, day-to-day examples.

Student Experiences

'The course Public Speaking in Various Cultural Contexts is composed of two parts, one focusing on public speaking skills and the other on cultural contexts. The former taught me body language and voice techniques, whereas the latter allowed me to understand how to adapt speeches to particular target audiences. In my opinion, this course is really useful. I can apply everything I learned to my study program and daily life. Follow the course to become a great speaker! Public speaking skills are just like a package – put your gift into it and it will present you in a suitable manner.'

Haodong Wang, Media and Culture Studies

'The Public Speaking Course in Various Cultural Contexts has been a great experience. I was able to develop my public speaking skills and adapt my speeches to different social and cultural settings. This course was really helpful and also fun! Most importantly, it gave me a lot of confidence to speak in public! '

– Helena Gutleb, International Relations and International Organisations

'I have learned how to adapt my speeches to cultural audiences in terms of structure, wording, body language, and style of reasoning. In the near future this will really help me when speaking in front of a crowd, as I will feel more secure knowing that what I try bringing across is received in the most effective way. Also, the body language techniques really helped me to look less nervous and distracted while giving a speech. All in all, I really enjoyed this course and I would recommend it to anyone with an interested in public speaking!'

– Sophie de Boer, Media and Culture Studies
