The Crossing Borders Series

'Living abroad has certainly expanded my perspective of the world. By trying to get comfortable in other cultures, trying to learn other ways of doing everything, I have learned much more about myself. Also by being exposed to new beliefs, ideas, and values, and by analyzing many aspects of my own culture under a new and richer light, I have broadened my viewpoint on many issues. Furthermore, I have acquired the recognition that in international affairs, language is not enough – that for the synergy of business and cultural relations to take place, deep intercultural understanding is required. My international experience is a source of richness that sets me apart from many people and has been a continuous benefit to my career.'

Antonella Corsi-Bunker; Switzerland, Italy and France. From Paige (2007)

  • CB1 Crossing Borders 1: Preparing to Go Abroad is for participants who intend to go abroad the semester after this course. This course is focused on developing your intercultural competence though each participant will also prepare for the specific culture of the country you are going to.
  • CB2 Crossing Borders 2: Maximizing Intercultural Competence While Abroad is for participants who are abroad. It is offered as a series of online seminars. This course is focused on further developing your intercultural competence though each participant will be implementing these skills in the specific culture of the country where you are while abroad.
  • CB3 Crossing Borders 3: Re-entry is for participants who have returned from a semester abroad (or longer). “Typically, the more successful you are in the country and culture where you have just been, the more difficult time you will have re-adjusting to your own culture.” This course focuses on successfully re-adjusting upon return, on ways to use the new skills and knowledge gained while abroad.

The Crossing Borders series – 1, 2 and 3 – combine competence development with country specific knowledge.

The Crossing Borders series – 1, 2 and 3 – can be followed separately or sequentially. In other words, it is possible to follow Crossing Borders 1, 2, and 3 after each other. Overlap in content is kept to a minimum. But, it is also possible to follow Crossing Borders 2 without having followed Crossing Borders 1. Each course is a stand-alone module.
