Import routes
Import routes for:
- PubMed
- Ebsco-host (with PsycINFO, Cinahl)
- Embase
- Cochrane Library
- SmartCat

Other databases (to the RefWorks site)
Pubmed
Import route from PubMed
- Search in PubMed for the desired publication(s).
- Mark one or more records.
- Click Send to.
- Select for Choose Destination: File.
- Select for Format: MEDLINE.
- Click Create File.
- Click Save and save the file as a Text Document.
- Go to RefWorks: References > Import.
- Select for Import Filter/Data Source: NLM PubMed.
- Select for Database: PubMed.
- Select for Import Data from the following Text File via Browse the file that you saved.
- Click Import.
Import route from RefWorks
- Go to RefWorks: Search > Online Catalog or Database .
- Select for Online Catalog or Database to Search: PubMed .
- Enter one or more search terms in the field Quick Search for:
- Click Search.
- Import the desired references.
EBSCOhost (contains: PsycINFO, CINAHL)
For Direct Export:
- Conduct a search.
- Click on the Add to folder icon for each of the results you want to save.
- Click on the Folder icon in the upper right-hand corner.
- Re-select the references to export.
- Click on the Export icon.
- Click the radio button in front of Direct Export to RefWorks to initiate a direct export .
Note: Uncheck the Remove these items from folder after saving option, if you want items to remain in the folder after performing the export function.
- Click the Save button to begin the direct export.
- Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder .
To Manually Save and Export Records:
- Conduct a search.
- Click on the Add to folder icon for each of the results you want to save.
- Click on the Folder icon in the upper right-hand corner.
- Re-select the references to export.
- Click on the Export icon.
- Click the radio button in front of Generic bibliographic management software .
Note: Uncheck the Remove these items from folder after saving option, if you want items to remain in the folder after performing the export function.
- Click Save .
- From the File menu select Save As .
- Select the location where you want to save the file, type the name you want and select Text as the Save As Type.
- Log in to RefWorks .
- Select References/Import from the toolbar.
- Select EBSCOhost as the data source and the appropriate database you searched from.
- Browse to find the text file you saved to your computer.
- Click Import.
- Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder .
Embase
- Conduct your search and mark your records for import using the check boxes.
- Select the Export button and choose Ref. Manager from the drop down box and click export.
- You will be prompted to save your . ris file. Choose a location, give the file a name and click save.
- Log in to RefWorks.
- Select References/Import from the toolbar.
- Select RIS Format as the data source and select Reference Manager as the database.
- Browse to find the text file you saved to your computer.
- Click Import.
- Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder .
Cochrane Library

To export a few references: Click on the checkbox to the left of each record to import and click on the Export Selected link at the top of the results list
To export all results: If you want to export all results from a search, just select Export All
- Choose your file type according to the computer you're using (PC, Mac, or UNIX/LINUX).
- For Export Type select Citation or Citation and Abstract.
- Click on Export Citation.
- When prompted, save the resulting text file where you'll be able to find it later.

Log in to RefWorks.
- Click the plus button in the toolbar and select Import references from the dropdown menu.
- Drag and drop your text file to the indicated space OR click Select a file from your computer, select the text file you saved, and click Open.
- RefWorks will ask what format the file is. Enter Cochrane Library, then select the database you were searching in from the dropdown menu.
- Click Import.
- Your records will be downloaded automatically and should appear in your Last Imported folder.
SmartCat
- Search SmartCat for the desired publication
- Click on the arrow and select Cite record
- Click Cite with RefWorks
- Click Import
- Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder
