Welcome to our versatile Archaeology programme, judged best in the Netherlands for the last 10 years, which will help you become a top-level archaeologist. All pre-university profiles are accepted!

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Archaeology at the University of Groningen, taught mainly in Dutch, allows you to study cultures from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages, and the Mediterranean all the way up to the Arctic region.

In your first year, you will take introductory classes in Classical and Mediterranean Archaeology, Archaeology of the Netherlands, and Arctic Archaeology, as well as in the history, methods and materials of the field, and finish with one month of fieldwork. In your second year, you will learn about bioarchaeological approaches and choose from a range of in-depth courses in Classical and Mediterranean Archaeology or Archaeology of North-West Europe. The year is closed with a field trip abroad and participation in an excavation in the Netherlands or abroad. In your third year, you will follow a Minor at the UG or other university in the Netherlands or abroad and complete your Bachelor’s degree programme by writing a thesis.

With your Bachelor's degree in hand, you an continue on to the one-year Master’s programme in Archaeology. Students who perform exceptionally and who enjoy doing research can enter the two-year Research Master’s programme in Archaeology.

Your second year will include several electives: in the first semester, you will follow the course units that are most interesting to you. Curriculum

The course units Archaeology of Classical Antiquity (Greek and Roman) and Prehistory of the Netherlands are also open to non-Archaeology students, who can follow them as part of a Minor in Archaeology or elective. Minors (minor)

A Minor is a coherent set of courses that support you in your next career step: the choice of a specific Master's degree programme or access to the labour market.

Besides that the Faculty minor gives you the opportunity to look beyond your field of study. A Minor comprises 30 ECTS.

The Honours College will give talented, motivated students the chance to be challenged even more by following Honours programmes and taking part in numerous other activities.

The Honours College comprises a broadening part and a deepening part and has a study load of 30 ECTS credit points besides the 180 ECTS credit points from your regular Bachelor programme.

De Faculteit der Letteren gaat er van uit dat jij, via een bezoek aan de Open dagen, deelname aan een Eén Dag student en/of aan een Webklas, jezelf goed hebt voorbereid op de opleiding van jouw keuze. Op basis van deze voorlichtingsactiviteiten bepaal jijzelf of je goed matcht met de opleiding.

After your studies

If you want to continue with a Master's degree programme after your graduation, as most students do, you will have a wide range of programmes to choose from. With a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, you have access to the following Master's tracks at the University of Groningen:

Job prospects

There are currently plenty of job opportunities for Archaeology graduates thanks to the legal requirement that archaeological research has to be conducted prior to any new building activity. Many graduates find jobs with archaeology firms that conduct such research. In addition, archaeologists are also needed at government institutions and museums. You could also find a job as a lecturer or researcher at a university.

Research

Teaching and research are closely linked to one another in Archaeology. You will conduct research right from the start of the degree programme.

Archaeology research falls under the renowned Groningen Institute of Archaeology and focuses on:

  • Prehistoric, protohistoric and historical archaeology in the Netherlands, the Mediterranean region, and the Arctic region
  • Archaeobotanical and archaeozoological research
  • Material studies
  • Landscape archaeology

The Institute has its own modern laboratory facilities, as well as a ‘attic of bones’.

    Hoi! Ik ben Isaac, ik ben tweedejaars student archeologie aan de RUG en ik woon op kamers in de stad. Ik heb het erg naar mijn zin op de opleiding en ben ook lid van de studievereniging Bachur. Ik vind lezen en sporten erg leuk, ik ben lid van Tjas (de schaatsvereniging) en van de GSAC (de klimvereniging). Ik ben zelf altijd druk bezig met van alles, ik werk op festivals door heel Nederland dus ik kom ook nog eens ergens.

    Waarom archeologie?

    Ik wilde in eerste instantie archeologie doen omdat ik geschiedenis op de middelbare school erg leuk vond. Nu ik bezig ben vind ik het een heerlijke combinatie van onderzoek doen, puzzelen en lekker buiten aan de slag zijn. Ik vind vooral de prehistorie erg interessant en ga me daar ook in specialiseren vanaf dit jaar. Ik heb hiervoor een jaar de HBO-opleiding archeologie aan Saxion gevolgd en hoewel ik dat ook echt heel leuk vond, voel ik mij op mijn plek bij de bachelor archeologie aan de RUG.

    Over Suzan

    Heyhoi! Ik ben Suzan, ik ben 20 jaar en zit op het moment in het derde jaar van de Bachelor Archeologie, waar ik het enorm naar mijn zin heb. Ik zit sinds een jaar op kamers in Groningen en ook ben ik lid van de studievereniging Bachur. Daarnaast vind ik het erg leuk om creatief bezig zijn door onder andere te tekenen, en houd ik ervan om te sporten en lekker actief te zijn. Ik onderneem graag dingen met vrienden, zoals een bezoek aan een van de vele musea in Nederland, maar vind het ook heerlijk om in de zomer rustig met een boek in de zon te liggen.

    Waarom archeologie?

    Al sinds mijn vijfde zeg ik vol overtuiging dat ik archeoloog wil worden. Gewoonlijk slepen ouders hun kinderen met tegenzin mee naar allerlei musea, maar bij mij was dit omgekeerd! Ook met mijn opa en oma heb ik veel musea bezocht, waardoor mijn interesse voor alles wat met archeologie en geschiedenis te maken heeft steeds groter werd. Naarmate ik ouder werd ben ik de archeologie en in het bijzonder de prehistorie alleen nog maar interessanter gaan vinden. Daarom was voor mij de keuze voor de studie al snel gemaakt. Nu, in mijn derde jaar van de opleiding, heb ik er nog geen moment spijt van gehad en ben ik heel blij met mijn studiekeuze.

    Hoi! Ik ben Nina, 20 jaar oud en ik ben derdejaars studente van de Bachelor Archeologie. Ik ben in 2018 begonnen met mijn studie en ik geniet er nog steeds enorm van. Het puzzelen en verhalen vertellen over vroegere culturen blijft fascinerend.

    Binnen de studie ben ik ook actief als studentmentor en ik ben lid van de studievereniging Bachur. Naast mijn studie lees en wandel ik graag en ik vind het leuk om met vrienden samen te eten of een film te kijken.
    Waarom Archeologie?

    Op de middelbare school had ik een NG-pakket met wiskunde B en kunst. Mijn interesses hebben dus altijd al tussen de natuurwetenschappen en kunst ingezeten. Toen ik de Bachelor Archeologie tegenkwam besefte ik mij dat dit de perfecte combinatie was van alles wat ik leuk vind. Als kind ging ik altijd graag naar musea en op vakantie vond ik het geweldig om bij kastelen of voormalige tempels te kijken. Toen wist ik nog niet dat je daar ook je studie van kon maken. Het mooie van archeologie is dat je verhalen kan vertellen over veel verschillende periodes.

    Wat de opleiding Archeologie voor mij zo leuk maakte, is de brede manier waarop je het verleden probeert te begrijpen. Soms door in de literatuur te duiken, maar ook door bijvoorbeeld prehistorisch aardewerk te bestuderen.

    Ik heb altijd een interesse gehad in het verre verleden. In eerste instantie koos ik voor de bachelor Griekse en Latijnse taal en cultuur. Tijdens deze studie volgde ik mijn eerste archeologievakken. Deze vakken bevielen zo goed, dat ik besloot een tweede bachelor te doen: Archeologie. Al tijdens mijn bachelor wist ik dat ik verder onderzoek wilde doen. Daarom koos ik voor de Research Master Archaeology. Tijdens mijn master heb ik mij gespecialiseerd in de bronstijd en ijzertijd van Noord-Nederland. Mijn master vormde daarmee de opmaat voor mijn promotieonderzoek: Het ontstaan van dorpen in de ijzertijd in Noord-Nederland.

    Archeologie is een studie waarbij je veel praktisch bezig kunt zijn. In de bachelor doe je een aantal maal mee aan veldwerk. Je leert dan wat er allemaal komt kijken bij een opgraving: sporen interpreteren, inmeten, tekeningen maken, vondsten nummeren, een grondvak uitzeven. Dat is altijd weer spannend: wat vind je?

    Meestal kleine dingen als splinters van een vuursteen, scherven of restmateriaal. Maar één keer heb ik een mooi stuk versierd aardewerk gevonden. Echt grote opgravingen doe je niet vaak. Meestal een kleine boring in de grond of een onderzoek in een proefsleuf, een klein stuk afgegraven land.

    Weinig mensen weten dat archeologie heel divers is. Dat je bijvoorbeeld ook plantensporen kunt onderzoeken, of zaden. Ik vind het ontzettend leuk om buiten te werken en in een team met van alles bezig te zijn. Het is fysiek werk, dat spreekt me ook aan. Er worden bij de studie altijd wel vrijwilligers gezocht voor opgravingen. Soms doe je dat binnen je studie, soms is het extra. Ik ben ook vrijwilliger bij de Stichting Monument en Materiaal. Ik poets vondsten schoon, maak tekeningen van het materiaal en puzzel bijvoorbeeld scherven in elkaar tot een potje.

    Door te onderzoeken kunnen we het leven van mensen reconstrueren en daar meer over vertellen. Publiek informeren vind ik een belangrijk deel van archeologie. Ik geef ook graag cursussen aan kinderen. Ik heb inmiddels goed leren presenteren. Op Spitsbergen hield ik nog een presentatie waar minister Koenders bij was. Dat vind ik nu helemaal niet meer eng.

    Ik ben Jasper Weinans, een 22 jarige archeologie student. Ik ben opgegroeid in een klein dorpje in Friesland, genaamd Langedijke. Na de middelbare school heb ik een jaar de opleiding HBO Docent Geschiedenis gevolgd in Leeuwarden. Na het halen van mijn propedeuse ben ik Archeologie gaan studeren in Groningen. Nu woon ik al 2 jaar in Groningen en nog steeds met veel plezier. Naast het studeren werk ik bij de Gall & Gall en speel gitaar bij een band. Ook ga ik graag de stad in om bijvoorbeeld even te poolen, een filmpje te pakken of gewoon een (speciaal)biertje te drinken één van de oneindig vele kroegjes in Groningen.

    Waarom Archeologie?

    Na mijn jaar HBO wist ik dat ik universiteit wilde doen. In eerste instantie zou ik Geschiedenis gaan studeren. Toevallig kwam ik bij de open dag iemand tegen die Archeologie ging studeren, wat stiekem altijd mijn droom is geweest. Na de ontmoeting ben ik mij gaan oriënteren op Archeologie en bleek het de perfecte studie voor mij te zijn! Het theoretische gedeelte is erg interessant en breed (van de Romeinen tot Neanderthalers). Elk jaar ga je als Archeologie student ook nog eens een maand opgraven (in Nederland en in het buitenland). Deze combinatie van de theorie en praktijk zorgt altijd voor nieuwe uitdagingen tijdens je studie! Als je interesse hebt in geschiedenis, maar toch ook een praktisch persoon bent is Archeologische een erg goede studiekeus!

    ‘Na een jaar Geschiedenis besloot ik toch om in plaats daarvan Archeologie te gaan studeren. Met name de praktische onderdelen van deze opleiding spraken mij aan en tot nu toe bevalt mijn keuze erg goed. In het eerste semester behandel je vooral de noodzakelijke, met name multidisciplinaire, theoretische aspecten van de Archeologie. In het tweede semester krijg je al snel een goede dosis praktijkervaring mee. Archeologie is een van de kleinere studies aan de RUG en daarmee gaat nauw contact met de docenten gepaard, wat erg fijn is! Groningen is bij uitstek de stad voor een prettige studententijd. Het is een stad waar sfeer en gemoedelijkheid nooit ver weg zijn.’

    Ik ben mijn hele leven al geïnteresseerd in hoe de wereld om mij heen werkt en tot stand gekomen is. Archeologie geeft je tastbaar materiaal uit het verleden, waardoor je heel direct met de mensen van toen bezig bent. Op het moment dat je een object uit de grond haalt, ben jij de eerste die het weer vasthoudt sinds het vele jaren geleden in de grond is beland. Ik heb tot nu toe opgegraven in Nederland maar ook in het buitenland, in Italië.

    Na mijn bachelor wil ik graag de onderzoekmaster doen. Hierin wil ik mij vooral focussen op de biologische archeologie: de studie van zaden en dierlijk en menselijk botmateriaal in een archeologische context. Ook grafgebruiken vind ik heel erg interessant. Vandaar dat ik mijn bachelorscriptie schrijf over urnenvelden in Drenthe, dit zijn crematie grafvelden uit de late brons- en ijzertijd.

    Ik ben in Groningen gaan studeren vanwege de nadruk die hier ligt op de bio-archeologie. Daarbij is de opleiding hier klein, met een eigen gebouw en studieplekken. Hierdoor leer je gemakkelijk veel mensen kennen.

    Interesse in het verleden heb ik altijd al gehad. Omdat ik behoefte had om dit verleden te ervaren besloot ik mij aan te melden voor een opgraving in Israël. Terwijl ik tussen de basilica's en badhuizen rondliep besloot ik om ook Archeologie te gaan studeren.

    De grote hoeveelheid praktijk - oftewel veldwerk- is voor veel studenten een belangrijke reden om te kiezen voor Archeologie. Zo ook voor mij. Naast de praktische kant is er natuurlijk in het programma ook ruim aandacht voor de minstens net zo interessante theorie achter de Archeologie.

    Naast studeren ben ik ook op andere manieren betrokken bij de opleiding. Zo ben ik actief in zowel de Opleidingscommissie als de Raad van Advies. Daarnaast ben ik voorzitter van de studievereniging van Archeologie: Bachur. Samen met de rest van het bestuur organiseren wij allerlei activiteiten voor de archeologiestudenten zoals museumbezoeken, borrels, workshops vuursteenbewerking en een jaarlijkse excursie naar het buitenland. Hierdoor leer je niet alleen gemakkelijk nieuwe mensen kennen, maar ook jezelf te ontwikkelen.’

Web class

Are you a pre-university pupil and would you like to find out what studying at university is all about? The Archaeology degree programme offers a web class! A web class is a course offered by the UG via Brightspace (a digital teaching environment) for pupils in the 5th and 6th years of pre-university education. The course involves ten study hours, which serve as an introduction to Archaeology. You read texts, do assignments and hold discussions with other prospective students and a lecturer.

What does Archaeology entail?: Fieldwork and the Bone Attic

Are you curious about the Archaeology programme and would you like to know more about the fieldwork carried out by Bachelor's students? In this video you tag along with students that are digging around a convent in Ter Apel.

The Archaeology programme also has a bone attic. Here you will find the bone collection of the archaeologists of the UG. Based on these bones they learn about the cohabitation of humans and animals in the past. In this video, the collection manager gives a tour of the bone attic.

If you have earned fewer than 45 ECTS and are issued a negative result, you will not be allowed to continue with your degree programme.

You will receive preliminary study advice in December to make sure that you know where you stand. Please contact your study advisor as soon as possible if you have any questions about the BSA system. N.B. Some degree programmes use a tutoring system; please check with your study advisor.

Study support

The transition from secondary school to university changes many aspects in your life, therefore we provide extra support during the first year of your studies.

In orders to ease this transition, the UG offers mentor classes for first-year students. During the meetings, you will learn how to optimize and make informed decisions throughout your studies. Additionally, you can always arrange to meet with your study advisor. They will be able to answer your questions and provide advice related to your degree programme. They also offer support for students with functional impairments. Everything you discuss with a study advisor is confidential. They can also refer you to the student counsellors or workshops by Study Support.
