Album Amicorum for alumni of the University of Groningen wins international award

15 June 2011

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has granted a Silver Award to the Album Amicorum, the graduation gift from the University of Groningen to Master students and PhDs. CASE – with headquarters in the USA – is viewed worldwide as the no.1 organization for professionals working in the field of alumni relations and fundraising in higher education.

CASE awarded the Silver Award to the Album Amicorum in the category Excellence in Design: Books.

Memento

For ages, academics carried with them an album amicorum, otherwise known as a friendship book. In it, they collected memories of dear ones and precious moments. The book that was developed by the University of Groningen elaborates on this tradition.

The Album (160 pages, bound and published luxuriously) is a lasting keepsake, in writing but especially images, to the student days, the city of Groningen and the University. Moreover, the book contains all kinds of elements that can personalize it, such as room for writing messages (e.g. by friends) and for sticking in pictures.

Noorderlicht

This concept was thought up by Bert Wolfkamp, employee of the department of Alumni Relations & Fundraising of the University of Groningen. Consequently, Wolfkamp developed the Album in collaboration with photo manifestation Noorderlicht.

The graduation gift was financially sponsored through an initiative of RUG-alumnus Jan Zegering Hadders, board member of the Ubbo Emmius Foundation and former president of the board at ING Netherlands.
