Animal Welfare Body

The Animal Welfare Body has tasks arising from the Law on Animal Experiments. These tasks are related to, among other things, animal welfare, alternatives, procedures, registration, supervision and communication with the Competent Authority (Centrale Commissie Dierproeven, CCD). These are the most important tasks:

Animal Welfare and Alternatives

  • advise on animal welfare in the purchase, accommodation, care and use of animals  
  • advise on replacement, reduction and refinement (the 3Rs)
  • inform about technical and scientific developments
  • determine and test procedures for monitoring and reporting on animal welfare
  • provide information and advice about the adoption and appropriate socialization of laboratory animals

Procedures

  • coordinate a project proposal with the applicant before applying for a project license at the CCD    
  • coordinate the implementation of an animal experiment with the researcher
  • determine together with the researcher whether changes in research protocol should be submitted to the CCD

Registration and supervision

  • provide registration records about animal experiments and lab animals
  • monitor animal welfare
  • monitor the registration and evaluate the qualifications, skills, competences of persons working with lab animals

Competent Authority (CCD)

  • provide data for the retrospective assessment  
  • report when a project is carried out differently than stated in the license
  • verifying the non-technical summary
  • all other correspondence with the CCD

More

  • develop internal policies  
  • communicate about animal experimenting(policy)
  • contribute to (additional) training
  • to be the first point of contact for (imminent) problems of animal welfare
  • connect researchers and animal caretakers and stimulate cooperation
  • to be the first point of contact for the inspectors of the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA)
