Aletta Jacobs College Tour: Lilianne Ploumen

This year, Lilianne Ploumen will receive the Aletta Jacobs Prize. This prize is awarded by the University of Groningen every two years to a woman with an academic background who has contributed to women emancipation in the national or international arena. The prize gets its name from the first female student at the University of Groningen and the first female doctor in the Netherlands, Aletta Jacobs (1854-1929). Past winners of the prize include Neelie Kroes, Hedy d’Ancona, and Petra Stienen.

Who is Lilianne Ploumen?

On 8 March 2018, former minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, former chair of the PvdA party and current member of the Dutch Parliament, Lilianne Ploumen, will receive the Aletta Jacobs Prize 2018. This prize will acknowledge her substantial contribution as a member of the World Bank Group’s (WBG) Advisory Council on Gender and Development from 2015 until 2017 and as creator of the 'She Decides' support fund. The 'She Decides' support fund is an international initiative to maintain essential facilities for women in the field of family planning.

College Tour

On the evening before the prize-giving ceremony, Wednesday 7 March 2018, a College Tour event will be organized by the University of Groningen Honours College master students in Lilianne Ploumen’s honour. This event, based on the concept 'College Tour' on Dutch television, gives students the opportunity to interact with Lilianne Ploumen and ask questions about her life, achievements and political views. The host of the evening is Dr Els Maeckelberghe, medical ethicist at the UMCG.

Submitted questions will be divided into four topics: career, personal, ‘She Decides’, and future perspectives. At the hand of these topics, the organization of the College Tour will select the most interesting and original questions to be asked during the event. The people whose question is chosen to be asked during the event, will be contacted before 6 March.
