A switchable antibiotic

09 October 2013

University of Groningen scientists have created an antibiotic whose activity is regulated using light. It can be ‘switched on' just before it’s to be used, after which it slowly becomes less active. This can prevent the active antibiotic from entering the environment and causing bacteria there to become more resistant. This innovation was described in an article in Nature Chemistry.

The weekly online video magazine Unifocus highlights topics related to the University of Groningen in the fields of research and society, student life, teaching, policy and internationalization.
