Frijlink, prof. dr. Erik
Erik Frijlink (1960, Meppel) is sinds 1998 hoogleraar Farmaceutische Technologie en Biofarmacie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Daarvoor was hij hoofd van de afdeling Farmaceutische Ontwikkeling van Solvay Pharmaceuticals. Zijn onderzoeksgroep richt zich op geavanceerde technologie voor verbeterde toediening van medicijnen en heeft internationaal een prominente plaats verworven op dit terrein.
Zeker 600.000 patiënten gebruiken een inhalator die is bedacht door het team rondom Frijlink. ‘En het gaat richting de één miljoen. Het is mooi als je een product ontwikkelt dat patiënten kan helpen’, zegt Frijlink. De Novolizer is een poederinhalator, waarmee bijvoorbeeld astmapatiënten medicijnen in hun longen krijgen. Het geheim van de inhalator is de cycloon, een kamer waarin het geneesmiddel snel ronddraait, aangedreven door de inhalatiekracht van de patiënt.
Huibregtsenprijs nominatie prof.dr. Erik Frijlink
Frijlink leidt een internationaal consortium dat zoekt naar een universeel griepvaccin. Het onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd door twaalf internationale partners. De Europese Unie steunt het onderzoek met een subsidie van zes miljoen euro. Frijlink denkt dat het niet lang meer duurt voor er een vaccin is dat mensen beschermt tegen alle vormen van griep. Zo'n vaccin zou de jaarlijkse seizoensprik overbodig maken. Frijlink verwacht vooral veel van middelen die via een inhalator kunnen worden toegediend. Dat zou effectiever kunnen zijn dan een injectie.
Frijlink was genomineerd voor de Huibregtsenprijs 2016. Uit het juryrapport: "Het werk van Frijlink is exemplarisch voor baanbrekend onderzoek dat tegelijkertijd van groot belang is voor onze maatschappij. Het koppelt wetenschappelijke excellentie aan maatschappelijke relevantie en is tevens een van de weinige voorbeelden van hoe een vinding op een Nederlandse universiteit leidt tot een aanmerkelijke licentiestroom."
