Export of Groningen medical curriculum to Saudi Arabia

Signing the contract
Signing the contract

As of 2012, medical students of King Faisal University (KFU) in Saudi Arabia will be taught according to the Groningen medical teaching model. To this end, a contract was recently signed by professor Sibrandes Poppema, President of the Board of the University of Groningen.

The main purpose of this project is to implement the Groningen medical curriculum at King Faisal University in Al Ahsa. One of the main features of the Groningen curriculum is its patient oriented and problem based approach. KFU staff will therefore be prepared and trained for the transition from a classic curriculum into a problem based curriculum.

"The fact that KFU with full support of the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Higher Education has selected the medical curriculum of the University of Groningen Medical Center out of a competitive field of other proposals, can be taken as a great compliment for the quality of the educational programmes in Groningen", said Professor Poppema.
