Broadband internet in Zambia
A delegation of the Vice Chancellors of the three largest Universities in Zambia and the Chief Executive Officer of the Zambia Research and Education Network visited our University. Some 5 years ago the Universities joined forces to establish a national ICT organization which supports education and research. The Dutch Government, through the NUFFIC, has funded the project which is currently coming to an end.
With assistance from a consortium led by the University of Groningen, the Zambia Research and Education Network is now operational and self-sustaining in terms of means and capacities. The project’s major milestones are (1) the availability of broadband Internet for staff and students at a level which is significantly above the average in Africa and (2) the availability of Eduroam at the Universities. The delegation also visited Surfnet, Radboud University, the Free University and the NUFFIC. The project will end as per 1 st of April 2015. In the final stages of the project the focus is on the further development and implementation of E-Learning in Zambia.
