In this thesis, various aspects and forms of supramolecular (literally: above molecular) chemistry are studied. This thesis focusses in particular on stimuli responsive supramolecular systems, meaning that the supramolecular structures will form, break up or transform upon certain changes in conditions.

From a chemical perspective, the simplest change in conditions is a temperature change, as it is completely reversible, easy to apply and the outcome is very often easy to predict. Other stimuli are changes in concentration, solvent, pH and the addition of other chemicals such as catalysts or reactants. In this thesis the focus lies however on light and mechanical stimulation, two stimuli which are completely reversible, show excellent spatial and temporal control and are relatively easy to apply. This thesis deals in particular with the incorporation of such stimuli responsive moieties into supramolecular systems and the study of the resulting complexes.
