Dr. M.H. Verspoor
Marjolijn Verspoor is Lecturer at Applied Linguistics, English Language and Culture and Communication and Information Studies. The Master Programme Applied Linguistics has a student population that originates for about 50 % from outside the Netherlands: Europe, Asia, Africa, North- and South-America. Ms. Verspoor has a broad experience with studying and working abroad and that is one of the reasons why she is eminently capable of understanding the challenges students from abroad are facing in Groningen. She also has a major role in coaching students.
"Patience like a Saint", has been one of the attributes one of the students gave, thinking about Ms. Verspoor. In general Ms. Verspoor is considered a truly friendly, open and supportive person. That becomes very evident because of the atmosphere in her courses. Little jokes and illuminating anecdotes tend to attract and keep the attention and concentration of her students. Interaction is an important feature of her courses; the same applies for her international orientation and the talent to focus on the various backgrounds of her students. Very often she schedules extra study hours, in case a student may have problems understanding the course content. Ms. Verspoor is very conscientious about grading and she is ever approachable, both in person as by e-mail. Students usually receive an answer very promptly and that is possibly the reason why so many students ask for her help if they have serious problems.
