Dr. B.L. Reitz-Joosse - Faculty of Arts
Bettina Reitz-Joosse is Assistant Professor of Latin Language and Literature. She studied classical languages at Oxford and then took her PhD in Leiden. After spending time at universities in Rome and the US, she moved to Groningen in 2015. Her work focusses on the relationship between literary texts and material culture in the ancient Roman world and on the reception of antiquity under Italian Fascism. She is a Board Member of the Young Academy Groningen and has recently become a member of the Young Academy of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
Bettina Reitz-Joosse, classicist ‘in heart and soul’, in her own words, is praised by her students for her commitment and the critical approach of her lectures. They claim to have learned a lot from her, illustrated by the following quote: ‘Her lectures have a high density of information and are of exceptional quality: each lecture offers new insights, and that is what it is all about. She teaches in a smooth, easy-to-follow and inspiring way, without shunning a critical tone, asking questions of her audience and stimulating discussion. This might lead to questions such as Can academics say what is right or wrong, or are these individual choices? A question that is difficult to answer, but that is what makes her lectures so interesting.
