Dr B.J. van Leeuwen - Faculty of Law
Barend van Leeuwen is a Lecturer of European Law. His areas of expertise include European Law, the internal market, legal protection, European private law and health law. He studied in Cambridge, Bruges and London and received his PhD from the European University Institute in Florence.
Van Leeuwen challenges his students to think critically. His teaching methods have been described as ‘positively unconventional’ and ‘innovative’, but his teaching remains well organized and structured. Van Leeuwen outlines the existing legal framework, then asks questions that require reflection. This is how he teaches students to use legal argumentation and to find creative solutions. The students are very satisfied with the feedback they receive on their assignments every week and his adaptation of his teaching to their needs. Van Leeuwen uses the electronic learning environment extensively, both for large lectures with 400 attendees and for tutorials. Knowledge and insight are transferred through videos and peer-assisted study of the course material. Knowledge is tested via a CALI module. Interaction with the students takes place through their laptops, tablets or smartphones. Van Leeuwen is not the sort of lecturer who only teaches his classes; he also helped the international students set up a sort of legal advice centre or clinic, for example.
