Europe

The most intensive and widespread cooperation in education and research of the University of Groningen is within Europe. The European funding programmes for research and education have structured the relationships over the past 30 years. The implementation of the ‘Bologna Agenda’ and the Erasmus+ programmes boosted  cooperation between European Universities. Since 1990 the University of Groningen has invested more specifically in the relations with universities in Central and Eastern Europe, including Russia Ukraine, and the Balkans. Turkey

Bi-lateral and multi-lateral cooperation

Currently, UG has 350 Erasmus+ partners in the EU/EEA and 11 partners in EU neighbouring countries (e.g. Ukraine, Serbia and Russia) which gives a wide range of opportunities for student and staff mobility (KA1). Erasmus+ projects for strategic partnerships, capacity building, and policy reform (KA2 and KA3) create another range of cooperation partners in Europe. At research level, UG is involved in 47 Framework Programme 7 and 164 Horizon 2020 EU funded research projects. UG has 45 bi-lateral agreements or consortium agreements for the use of facilities, library cooperation and cooperates in Dutch institutes abroad in Rome, Florence, Athens and St. Petersburg.

Joint and Double Degrees

At the moment there are about 30 bi-lateral joint and double bachelor and master degree programmes with European partners. Memoranda of Understanding have been signed with international partners for the joint supervision of PhDs. In addition, the EU programme Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks fosters co-supervision of PhD-candidates.

European Institutional Networks

U4 Society was a strategic network from 2008 until 2019 that has been fully integrated into the ENLIGHT consortium.
