Distinguished Chair in Health System Innovation (0.2 FTE) (221526)

Job description

The distinguished chair in health system innovation will contribute to the contemporary scientific and policy debate on the realization of a sustainable health system in The Netherlands and specifically in the Northern Netherlands. This applies to the region-wide policy level as well as to the individual organizational level. Indeed, in order to maintain a sustainable health system, existing health care organizations and affiliate sectors will have to collaborate closely in integrated care networks. These ideally would encompass the full spectrum from community-based prevention, primary care through tertiary care and chronic care and back again. Such new forms of collaboration require an adjustment of the overall regulatory arrangements and possibly finance, as well as the strategies for individual care, cure and prevention organizations. Notably, the exploration of (blended) digital health technology as part of the development towards a sustainable health care system is recognized as a relevant part of the assignment.

Main Duties of the incumbent
The position encompasses the regular duties of a professor in the areas of teaching and research (as described in the UFO profile). The duties include but are not limited to:

● playing a prominent and visible role in stimulating research collaborations with adjacent fields and research- and health institutes in the (Northern)-Netherlands and abroa
● contributing to education at FEB on healthcare management
● contributing to building the (inter)national reputation and network for FEB and UMCG, specifically in the area of health system innovations
● contributing to the relevant research programs at FEB and UMCG and in particular to health system innovation research within the programs.


The candidate must possess the following qualifications:

● a PhD in healthcare management, medicine, economics or business
● strong practice experience in healthcare management
● proven ability to bridge the gap between academics and health policy/management
● excellent teaching abilities both at the undergraduate and post-graduate level.
● wide and relevant (inter)national network.


The University of Groningen, founded in 1614, has a strong focus on research. We are in the top 100 of several influential university ranking lists. Within this ambitious setting a joint University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) chair will be continued. More specifically, the chair in Health System Innovation will be appointed within the department of Operations of the FEB and will have a second appointment at the UMCG. The chair will participate in and provide a solid medical perspective as a basis for original and high-quality research and education on system innovation and quality improvement. The new professor is expected to take the lead in research on the theme of health systems innovation within UMCG and FEB. To achieve impact, he/she is expected to intensively collaborate with other researchers within UMCG and FEB, and where relevant other faculties of the University of Groningen.

Conditions of employment

The position is a chair by special appointment (“Bijzondere leerstoel”). Furthermore, it is a part-time position (0.2 FTE) for a period of five years, with the prospect of an extension. The chair has been established by the C.R. Rao Stichting.
The chair is supervised by a “College van Curatoren”, consisting of three members. These members are appointed as follows: one member by the C.R. Rao Stichting, one member by the board of the Faculty of Economics and Business (typically the chairperson of the Department of Operations), and one member by the university board (typically the dean of FEB).
