PhD position in Chronobiology / Behavioural Neuroscience (1.0 FTE) (221457)

Job description

Within the Neurobiology group of the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES) at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, a PhD research position is currently available. The project aims to study how light affects physiology and brain function. Light stimulation and isolated photoreceptor protocols will be applied to assess effects on circadian function, melatonin release, neuronal plasticity and cognitive function in day-active and night-active mammals (tupaias, mice). Objective alertness and performance will be measured using EEG based cortical responses and behavioural essays (attention, working memory, memory consolidation). Mechanisms underlying effects of light in cortical and hypothalamic regions will be dissected at the molecular, cellular, and synaptic level.

This PhD position is one of in total 25 positions at the core of the BioClock consortium, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) in the framework of the Dutch Research Agenda (NWA). BioClock is a national consortium in which academic institutes, societal partners, and industry join forces to address a broad spectrum of fundamental and applied research questions on the circadian clock in modern society. Research environment
Research will be performed in the Neurobiology group at the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES), which comprises several other strong, internationally recognized research groups in the field of evolutionary biology and behavioral and molecular neuroscience.

Qualifications

The successful candidate has a MSc degree in biology or biomedical science, with relevant experience in the area of chronobiology and (behavioral) neuroscience. Experience with surgical procedures and working with animals is appreciated and the candidate preferably has obtained an article 9 certificate.

The successful candidate has good command of English (oral and written), is a team player, and possess excellent communication skills (indicated by the ability to write scientific papers and deliver presentations).

Conditions of employment

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a salary of € 2,395 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 3,061 gross per month in the fourth and final year
• a full-time position (1.0 FTE)
• a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
• an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance
• minimum of 29 holidays and additional 12 holidays in case of full-time employment.

The position must result in a PhD thesis within the four-year contract period. A PhD training program is part of the agreement and the successful candidate will be enrolled in the Groningen Graduate School of Science. The successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position of one year with the option of a three-year extension, conditional on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next three years is expected.
