Assistant Professor Legal Methods (0.8 FTE) (221128)

Job description

The Department of Legal Methods has an opening for an Assistant Professor (Universitair Docent). The Assistant Professor will be involved in teaching and research activities.

The prospective Assistant Professor will teach and coordinate various courses in bachelor and master programmes. The courses concern introductory courses in law, such as Introduction to Law and Legal Skills. In this course, students are introduced in the major areas of law and legal skills. If language skills allow, the Assistant Professor will also be involved in introductory courses in Dutch, such as Algemene Rechtswetenschap 1 and Algemene Rechtswetenschap 2. If language skills allow, the Assistant Professor will also be involved in teaching and coordinating courses in Dutch concerning methods and methodology in legal research. These courses concern doctrinal legal research, empirical legal research and master thesis writing.

The Assistant Professor will conduct research within the department of Legal Methods. Research expertise and interests preferably lie in one or more of the following three research areas which play a central role in the research at the department: (1) public order and safety, (2) housing rights and law and (3) methods and methodology in legal research.

The Assistant Professor may participate in the research of the ERC project EVICT on the right to housing, evictions and data science. This project is coordinated by professor Michel Vols within the department (see

The Assistant Professor is expected to successfully undertake research: publish (peer-reviewed) journal articles and books (chapters), organise and participate in conferences and write grant proposals to acquire research funding. The Assistant Professor is also expected to fulfil a coordinating and/or pioneering role in the research group. Department of Legal Methods
The Assistant Professor will become a member of the Department of Legal Methods, a vibrant and relatively young legal multidisciplinary department at the faculty of law of the University of Groningen.


We are looking for candidates who meet the following qualifications:

• a (nearly) finished PhD in law
• possession of a basic university teaching qualification or preparedness to acquire this qualification within a reasonable timeframe
• experience in providing and coordinating courses at university level will be considered an advantage, but is not essential
• expertise in one or more of the research areas of the Department of Legal Methods
• willingness to (co-)supervise PhD and (research) master’s students
• experience in attracting external research funding
• an emerging national and/or international network
• fluency in English
• the ability to teach in Dutch will be a strong advantage
• ability to work both individually and as part of a team
• demonstrable competences: planning and organising, conceptual capacity, presenting, monitoring, flexibility, independent, analytical skills.

Conditions of employment

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a minimum salary of € 3,353 (scale 10.4) and a maximum salary of € 3,746 (scale 11.0) gross a month on a full-time basis in accordance with your experience
• a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income and an 8.3% year-end bonus
• a temporary position of 0.8 FTE (80%) for the period of one year with the option of renewal for a permanent employment. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year.
