The position encompasses the regular duties of a professor by special appointment (“Bijzonder Hoogleraar”) in the areas of teaching, research and administration.
More specifically, your tasks and responsibilities will include (with realistic expectations given the part-time position):
• participating in education on the topic on Retail Marketing, especially within the MSc in Marketing
• conducting (scientific and applied) research projects in the area of retail marketing, and publish in the national and international journals on these projects
• building and fostering connections between practice and science within the field of retail marketing
• contributing to the network of the Department of Marketing, with a focus on retailing
• contributing to the research climate, among others by co-supervising PhD students.
To qualify for the position, you should have:
• an adequate track record in scientific research, including a PhD and several publications in academic marketing and retailing journals, with a specific focus on retailing
• broad and extensive experience with and knowledge of retailing in practice
• wide and relevant network in the area of Retail Marketing
• excellent teaching abilities.
Retailing is a major discipline within the scientific field of marketing, and of critical importance in modern markets. Important developments take place both in offline and in online retail settings. Furthermore, omnichannel retailing causes major challenges. Oftentimes, retail analytics based on large databases play a central role in dealing with these challenges. This chair in Retail Marketing, for a professor by special appointment (“Bijzonder Hoogleraar”), will focus on these and related developments.
The chair in Retail Marketing aims to strengthen teaching and research activities in the field of Retail Marketing. The teaching focus of the chair is on a retail marketing course and supervision of students, especially within the MSc in Marketing. The chair holder will conduct scientific and applied research in close cooperation with faculty members and PhD students of the Department of Marketing. Of course, for both teaching and research, the activities will be limited given the part-time nature of the position.
The chair is positioned in the Department of Marketing and in the Research Programme Marketing, both within the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) in Groningen.
The Department of Marketing is one of the leading marketing groups in Europe. The department is responsible for all courses in marketing for students in the bachelor and the MSc in Marketing of the Faculty of Economics and Business. The department also participates in the Research Master and PhD programme of SOM.
Scientific research is concentrated in the research programme Marketing (part of the research school SOM), which obtained very high ratings in the most recent evaluation. The marketing research programme aims to conduct cutting-edge fundamental and applied research within and across the three main disciplines in the field of marketing: strategy, modeling and consumer behaviour. The research programme includes several important lines of research: retailing, customer relationship management, econometric modelling & analytics, digital marketing, health care marketing, advertising, persuasion and social influence, and consumer behaviour in response to marketing efforts. Moreover, contract research is conducted within the Customer Insights Center and the Groningen Digital Business Center, which form a bridge between science and practice.
Conditions of employment
The position is a chair by special appointment (“Bijzondere leerstoel”). Furthermore, it is a part-time position (0.2 FTE) for a period of five years, with the prospect of an extension. The chair is sponsored by the Stichting Anton Dreesmann Leerstoel voor Retail Marketing ((SADLRM), see https://antondreesmann.nl/).
The chair is supervised by a “College van Curatoren”, consisting of three members. These members are appointed as follows: one member by the SADLRM, one member by the board of the Faculty of Economics and Business (typically the chairperson of the Department of Marketing), and one member by the university board (typically the dean of FEB).
