Who is allowed to vote and what will be voted for?
All students and staff members of the UG are eligible for election and have the right to vote, in accordance with the Higher Education and Research Act (WHW: Wet op het Hoger Onderwijs en Wetenschappelijk onderzoek) and the UG Electoral Regulations.
All students who are registered at the University are eligible for election and have the right to vote. This also includes scholarship PhD students, but not external students (extraneus) or people who are registered for individual courses (cursist). Student assistants who work at a service unit or a faculty other than the one where they are registered as a student have the right to vote for the staff section of this service unit or faculty.
All staff members with a permanent or temporary appointment at the UG are eligible for election and have the right to vote. UMCG academic staff as well as UMCG support and administrative staff in the fields of teaching and research are also eligible for election and have the right to vote, under the conditions set by the UMCG. This also applies to staff of the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and similar organizations who are working at the University.
The electoral register used to exercise people’s right to vote and be elected is drawn up by the Central Voting Office. All students who are enrolled at the UG and all staff members who have an employment contract at the University at the time of the elections have the right to vote and to stand for election.
Elections will be held in May 2021 for the following councils:

The staff members of the University Council, the Faculty Councils and the Employee Councils are elected for a period of two years. The student members of the University Council and the Faculty Councils are elected for one year.
Half of the members of the University Council and the Faculty Councils are staff members elected by and from the staff of the University; the other half are elected by and from the student population. Employee Councils are the representative bodies of the University’s service units. Their members are elected by and from the staff for a period of two years.
