Yme Kuiper has been Professor by Special Appointment in Historical, Cultural and Religious Anthropology, via the Groningen University Fund, at the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies since 2006. He studies the historical and cultural background to current changes in the relationship between religion, society and culture. Research themes include the complex relationship between religious mobilization and the revived interest in nationalism and ethnic awareness – as currently seen throughout the world – and the roles of traditional and modern forms of religiousness in the Netherlands today. Kuiper studied Sociology and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Groningen and gained his PhD at the Faculty of Arts of the same institute in 1993 with a thesis entitled ‘Adel in Friesland 1780-1880’ [‘Nobility in Friesland, 1780-1880’]. This standard work has been awarded two academic prizes. He also publishes works on topics varying from sports history (the football player Abe Lenstra) to literature (the writers Louis Couperus and W.F. Hermans). In January 2012 Yme Kuiper and Jacob van Sluis published an interview with the famous historian Jonathan Israel (in Dutch).

As of september 2012, Kuiper will also be Professor by Special Appointment in Historic Country Houses and Estates.
