Timmerman, Prof. Greetje

Greetje Timmerman (1954) is professor of Youth as a Social Phenomenon at the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. Timmerman briefly worked as a teacher of Dutch and English, after which she graduated cum laude in sociology and gained her PhD in the social sciences from the University of Groningen in 1990. She subsequently continued to work for the University as a researcher and lecturer at the Groningen Institute for Educational Research, the department of Pedagogical Sciences and the University Centre for Gender Studies.
Timmerman’s research focuses on the ‘youth phase’ as a period in which adolescents together form their own social structures and cultures. In addition to the family and school, peers play an important role in the socialization of young people. In today’s generation, social and cultural developments such as individualization and digitization greatly affect the social and personal identity development of young people.
