Brookhuis, Prof. Karel

Karel Brookhuis
Karel Brookhuis

Karel Brookhuis is professor of Traffic Psychology. He studied Experimental Psychology at the University of Groningen and  gained his PhD with a study on information processing in brain waves. He then chose the path of traffic psychology and became a behavioural researcher in the field of traffic and transport for what was then known as the ‘Verkeerskundig Studiecentrum’ [Traffic Study Centre] of the University of Groningen. When this institute was closed, Brookhuis became University Reader at the department of Psychology.  In 2010 he became professor of Traffic Psychology. In addition, he has also been a professor at Delft University of Technology.

The Cabinet’s decision to raise the speed limit on most motorways to 130 is an irresponsible, bad idea, in Brookhuis’s opinion. ‘You’re introducing higher speed differences and more unrest on the roads – with all the risks that entails. It also significantly increases fuel consumption and the related pollution, with virtually no time gains whatsoever.’
