Bastiaanse, Prof. Roelien

Roelien Bastiaanse
Roelien Bastiaanse

Roelien Bastiaanse is professor of Neurolinguistics. She studied Dutch at VU University Amsterdam, conducted research in the field of language pathology in Brussels and then came to the University of Groningen, where she gained a PhD in aphasia. She is still very much involved in this subject, and she is also a member of the Netherlands Aphasia Society. Aphasia is a language impairment that occurs after brain damage.

Bastiaanse was closely involved in the organization of the international Science of Aphasia conference, which was held at the University of Groningen. This was the first time the conference took place in the Netherlands. At this five-day conference, lectures were given by internationally renowned neurologists, neuropsychologists, neurolinguists and speech therapists. The latest developments in aphasia research, the newest research techniques, as well as new computer treatment for aphasia patients were dealt with. Groningen is home to one of the leading institutions for language impairment in the world.

She recently designed an application for a tablet computer to replace printed language tests. The first trials were greeted enthusiastically by both therapists and patients. This unique aphasia diagnostic tool for tablets is the first of its kind in the world and due to be released soon.
In 2018 Professor Roelien Bastiaanse's online course Language Testing During Awake Brain Surgery started. It focuses on the relevance of language research during waking brain operations, and the complexity of language representation in the brain.
