Faaij, Prof. André

André Faaij is Distinguished Professor of Energy System Analysis and Academic Director of the Energy Academy Europe. He has a Master’s degree in Chemistry & Environmental Sciences from the University of Utrecht, where he also gained his PhD degree. Until 2014, he was Professor and Scientific Director at the Copernicus Institute of Utrecht University. Faaij works on energy transition with stakeholders at many levels, from regional to international. The Energy Academy Europe is a centre of excellence and public-private partnership in energy research, education and entrepreneurship, and is considered a strategic priority for the University of Groningen and its partners, including the energy sector, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, TNO & ECN and the regional government, as well as some 500 academics from a variety of fields, including both natural and social sciences.
Faaij is an influential researcher with a wide-ranging expertise in various fields, including biobased economy, renewable energy, transport and alternative fuels, capture and storage of CO2, modelling and scenario analyses of energy systems, technological learning and innovation in energy systems and energy policy. He advises the EC, IEA, the UN system, GEF, OECD, WEF, WEC, the energy sector, strategic consultants and NGO’s. He was lead author of the UNDP’s World Energy Assessment, Global Energy Assessment, IEA’s World Energy Outlook, the IPCC 4th & 5th assessments and Special Report on Renewable Energy. As a member of IPCC, he was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. He was appointed ‘Young Global Leader’ by the World Economic Forum. He is the author or coauthor of more than five hundred publications and qualifies as a ‘highly cited researcher’ according to Thomson Reuters criteria, meaning that he is considered to be one of the top 100 in his research field worldwide. In June 2015, he received the Linneborn Prize for outstanding contributions to the development of energy from biomass.
