World Champion Magnus Carlsen in Academy Building
On Wednesday 24 January, the city of Groningen will host the top of the international chess world for one match day of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. The Norwegian world champion Magnus Carlsen will be there, as well as Wesley So from the USA, Vladimir Kramnik of Russia and Dutchman Anish Giri.
The matches will be played in the Aula of the Academy Building of the University of Groningen, starting at 2 p.m. Anyone can follow the matches both live and online, with English commentary by Eric Hansen and Dutch commentary by Sipke Ernst.
Tata Steel ChessTournament
The Tata Steel Chess Tournament is one of the most prestigious chess events worldwide. This ‘Wimbledon of chess' attracts the best grandmasters, as well as thousands of amateurs, visitors and online followers around the world. The year 2018 marks the 80th anniversary of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament (formerly known as the Hoogoven Chess Tournament), which will be held from 12 to 28 January.
The key players have been divided into two groups of 14 chess players each: the Tata Steel Masters and the Tata Steel Challengers, including Jorden and Lucas van Foreest from Groningen. The Masters and the Challengers will be playing their first round in Wijk aan Zee on Saturday 13 January. The tournament will go on a tour on 17 January, starting in Hilversum and visiting Groningen one week later, on Wednesday 24 January. The tournament will have its final day in Wijk aan Zee again, on 28 January.
Other activities on 24 January
There will be several chess-related activities during the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. On match day, Wednesday 24 January, the Academy Building will host two 'Chess for Dummies’ sessions, led by Robert Ris, and Tata Steel will be offering a Recruitment Day, providing an introduction to the steel industry.

Saturday 20 January: Pub crawl tournament
A dynamic chess tournament, organized together with various Groningen chess clubs, where all teams will visit several pubs in the centre of Groningen from 4 p.m. on.
Monday 22 January: Lecture: ‘Chess and a little sex’ by Tex de Wit
Chess lecture with ‘Zondag met Lubach’ television celebrity Tex de Wit, organized by Studium Generale Groningen in the Academy Building at 8 p.m. Tex has been an avid chess player all his life and loves to talk about his passion.
Tuesday 23 January:Tata Steel Kids Games
Between 8:30 a.m. and 12 p.m., over 100 children from the Sterrensteen primary school in Vinkhuizen will participate in the Tata Steel Kids Games, where they will be introduced to chess through educational games.
Chess in Groningen
Groningen is home to many chess players, including Jorden, Lucas and Machteld van Foreest and their chess teacher Sergei Tiviakov. Former Youth Champions Sipke Ernst, Jan Werle and Joyce Fongers are all former UG students. In 2013 the city organized a match between grandmasters Karpov and Timman. In addition, Groningen hosted the European Championships over 20 times, as well as the World Chess Championship in 1997.
