Dr. J.R. Georgiadis - Faculty of Medical Sciences / UMCG
Janniko Georgiadis is Associate Professor and Head of the Anatomy section at the Department of Neurosciences. In that capacity, he teaches Anatomy to students, doctors in training and medical specialists. In addition, he is one of the few researchers in the world who do brain research into sexual behaviour. He gained his PhD with a thesis called ‘The Orgasmic Brain Exposed’ (2007).
Georgiadis is an extremely passionate lecturer, whose teaching is highly valued by his students. He is also involved in educational innovation, such as the development of digital teaching material using AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality), initiating large innovation projects that include the Virtual Dissection Room. For many projects, he seeks cooperation abroad, with the European Medical School Oldenburg-Groningen playing an important role. The business world is also involved in his projects. Earlier this year, he and his team received the UMCG Education Innovation Award for their Game of Guilds project, which uses a game concept, i.e. a computer game, to provide anatomical education, a development known as gamification. This is a form of education that corresponds to the way in which the current generation of students study.
