Han Thomas Adriaenssen
Hans Thomas Adriaenssen (1985) is a lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy. He followed degree programmes in Philosophy and Italian at the University of Groningen, graduating cum laude in each. He also spent four years studying Slavonic Languages. In 2013 he gained his PhD, also cum laude. In July 2015 he was awarded a Veni grant for research on Aristotelian philosophy.
Adriaenssen’s love of philosophy comes across clearly in his teaching, as demonstrated by the fact that he has been voted Faculty Lecturer of the Year four times. His students describe him as a very passionate lecturer who does a lot for his students. What Adriaenssen himself enjoys most about teaching is ‘explaining difficult material as clearly as possible’. In the next few years, scepticism will be the theme of VWO-level final exams in philosophy, and Adriaenssen is contributing to the teacher manual for this. He occasionally teaches school pupils himself and greatly enjoys it. ‘Studying philosophy teaches schoolchildren to reason and argue well from an early stage. It’s wonderful that philosophers can contribute to society in this way.’
