Stefania Travagnin

Theology and Religious Studies

Dr S. Travagnin is Director of the Centre for the Study of Religion and Culture in Asia, Rosalind Franklin Fellow, and university lecturer in Eastern religions, particularly Buddhism. Italian by birth, she studied in Venice and also attended the National Chengchi University in Taibei (Taiwan). She gained her PhD at the University of London and subsequently worked in the UK, the US and Canada.

Travagnin enthuses her students by referring to her own experiences in academic fieldwork. When she compiles her lectures, she allows leeway for a more in-depth study of certain themes. Travagnin: ‘You can structure your syllabus, but many things also depend on your group. […] The students must also be able to participate in formulating the educational programme.’ Accordingly, she stimulates her students to actively consider and apply the theory when they do assignments in preparation for the lectures. Travagnin enjoys using visual resources, such as photos and short films, as informative support. There is much mutual interaction among the students in her lectures, as well as between the students and the lecturer. She leaves plenty of scope for humour in her lectures and her charismatic personality makes her extremely accessible and approachable.
