Mentko Nap

Faculty of Law

Mentko Nap (1978) is lecturer in the Constitutional Law and International Law department. Between 1996 and 2001, he studied Law at the University of Groningen. He started his PhD research directly afterwards, and later became a lecturer. In 2004, he was a guest lecturer at the University of Aruba. His thesis deals with the way in which the Council of State (Netherlands) issues advice and interprets the Constitution.

Nap’s interest lies mainly in constitutional theory, the organizational law of the High Councils of State (Netherlands), national and decentralized politics, and the constitutional law of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. He teaches various subjects in the field of constitutional law, in both the Dutch-taught Law programme and the English-taught International and European Law programme. Nap is admired as a very approachable lecturer who can clearly explain the occasionally rather abstract subject matter. He makes use of humour in his lectures, but also takes care to ensure that the students master the material. His lectures are interactive, so that students are kept on their toes. He is also open to the opinions and ideas of students.
