Clemens Six

Faculty of Arts

Dr C. Six (1975) is university lecturer at the Department of Contemporary History. After gaining his PhD at the University of Vienna, he followed a postgraduate training programme at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. He has been a consultant for UNESCO in Paris, and subsequently a researcher-lecturer in Vienna, Chicago and Bern.

Six is described as a passionate lecturer who offers students new insights into contemporary history. In doing so, he enjoys combining his educational activities with his own research that is directed toward religion and secularism in India, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia after 1945. Even the most disinterested students are enthused by his energetic and active teaching style. He involves all his students in the work group discussions. They are impressed by his enormous professional knowledge. Six was born in Austria and students are often surprised by the speed with which he mastered the Dutch language. He allows first-year students a great deal of flexibility if they wish to write their papers in Dutch. During the lectures in the first year, students may also ask questions in Dutch. The lectures are invariably engrossing and challenging, not least as a consequence of the enthusiasm that Six himself exudes when teaching.
