Dr J.H.M. ter Haar, LLM
Hans ter Haar (1970) studied notary law at Radboud University Nijmegen. He is a member of the department of Private Law of the University of Groningen and gained a PhD in 2013 with a thesis entitled Minderjarigen en (de zorg voor hun) vermogen (The property of minors and bearing responsibility for it). His enthusiasm for the subject is infectious: many students attended the PhD ceremony.
Ter Haar is able to clearly explain difficult material. He is creative and makes drawings to illustrate and clarify the lecture material. In his lectures, he shows how certain situations are structured using humorous cartoons. The learning material is closely connected to reality and recent jurisprudence, thus addressing current developments in law. Required reading sometimes includes his own articles. As a result, students are aware of his research and his takes on certain legal lines of reasoning and viewpoints. This leads to discussion during the lectures, which proves highly instructional. Ter Haar is easily approachable. Students’ questions are answered quickly, in person and via e-mail. His office door is always open and he has his students’ interests at heart. He often attends activities organized by the study association for notary law students, Vevonos, where he enjoys chatting with others. This means he is well informed, and makes it easy for students to strike up a conversation.
