The Postsecular and the Posthuman; seminar by Prof Rosi Braidotti

When:Tu 04-02-2014 16:30 - 18:00
Where:Zittingszaal, Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, Oude Boteringestraat 38, Groningen

Prof Rosi Braidotti (University of Utrecht) will give a seminar discussing her recently published bookThe Posthuman

The posthuman condition consists of a double shift: a fi rst move away from the premises and expectations of Humanism and a second move away from the habit of anthropocentrism. Both the posthumanist and the post-anthropocentric moves have fundamental consequences for the vision of the human implicit in the practice of the Humanities. The critique of Humanism entails special consequences for the discussion of secularism, because the humanist tradition guaranteed a secular space not only politically (separation of Church from State) but also intellectually, in so far as it accepted the rule of scientifi c reason. In the light of current postsecular discussions about religion in the public space, the question of the historical, conceptual and political relationship between Humanism and secularism needs to be raised and to be analyzed more thoroughly.

About the speaker:

Rosi Braidotti is a Philosopher and Distinguished University Professor at Utrecht University as well as director of the Centre for the Humanities in Utrecht. Braidottiļæ½s publications have consistently been placed in continental philosophy, at the intersection with social and political theory, cultural politics, gender, feminist theory and ethnicity studies. Braidotti makes a case for an alternative view on subjectivity, ethics and emancipation and pitches diversity against the postmodernist risk of cultural relativism while also standing against the tenets of liberal individualism. Throughout her work, Braidotti asserts and demonstrates the importance of combining theoretical concerns with a serious commitment to producing socially and politically relevant scholarship that contributes to making a difference in the world.
