Information for students

A project at the Science Shop has many advantages:

  • You will perform research with practical relevance. Your report will not disappear in a drawer, but will be used by the civil society partner and other interested parties.
  • You will learn to translate scientific information into comprehensible language. You will gain experience in writing for a target audience. This will certainly be of great benefit in your career.
  • Apart from performing scientific research, you will also gain other experiences like making contacts outside university (for example with the civil society partner , who may be a patient organization or environmentalgroup, and other potential stakeholders such as experts and local authorities).
  • You will have ample possibility for initiative and creativity; you will independently (but backed by your supervisors) tackle an existing problem.

As a student you will perform a research project of the Science Shop as part of your study program: you will be supervised by a university teacher and you will earn ECTS study points. These are some of the possibilities:

  • Bachelor thesis
  • Master thesis
  • A project within the Minor People, Planet, Profit
  • A case study for another course, if possible and agreed with that course’s coordinator.

The final product of your project will often be a research report, but may also be a non-specialist magazine article, a workshop or debate. In some cases (contents for) a website, a film or poster may be an obvious choice.
