All our research is embedded in the UMCG research institutes “Northern Center for Healthcare Research” (NCH) and “Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences” (BCN). The research performed is organized according to three broad topic areas:
- Overuse injuries
- Physical activity and sports injuries
- Sport and physical activity in special populations
Below, the titles and names of the currently running funded research projects in each topic:

Healthy Life style
Adrie Bouma, Paul van Wilgen, Koen Lemmink, Arie Dijkstra, Ron Diercks
Different methods are used for physical activity promotion such as: lifestyle campaigns, telephone counseling, or oral counseling with or without physical activities. These studies however described contradictory effects. Moreover, a large percentage of participants stopped being physically active after the intervention (Bredahl et al, 2008). Physical activity counseling interventions among primarily sedentary individuals should be partly based on barrier and task self-efficacy (Blanchard, 2007).
Therefore, this study will develop a new perspective of lifestyle counseling in primary care. A method will be developed that aims to change people's behavior by focusing on circumventing barriers
to reduce relapse by tailored goal setting (little steps)
and releasing guidelines of physical activity. This intervention focuses on preventing relapse.
How to prevent knee injury in fast sports conditions: the difference between men and women
Anne Benjaminse, Bert Otten, Koen Lemmink en Ron Diercks
A research project looking at prevention of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in female and male soccer players. We will investigate the effects of an intervention program on the central somatosensory and neuromuscular system and how the intervention program will potentially promote dynamic stability of the knee, with the ultimate goal to reduce the incidence of ACL injuries. After establishing the effect of the intervention program in a selected sample of soccer players, we will investigate the possibilities to prospectively conduct the program at a larger scale
