Studying Dentistry in Groningen

The Dentistry programme in Groningen means studying as a team. More and more dentists cooperate with dental hygienists who can take over specific tasks, such as the treatment of certain gum disorders. During your study period in Groningen you will be prepared for this cooperation. The Dentistry programme was designed in close cooperation with the Dental hygiene programme of the Hanze University Groningen. Students of dentistry and dental hygiene study and work together, an education method not to be found elsewhere in The Netherlands.

Focusing on patients

Another special feature is our curriculum, focusing on patients and problems. To understand a certain dentistry problem, you need to have knowledge of different subjects. In Groningen, we do not just dish out the necessary information. Instead, students will be looking for solutions themselves. You will only be invoking the help of a teacher when you cannot figure it out by yourself. This method, revolving around patients and the (solutions to) their problems, does not only make studying more interesting, but also offers a good preparation for the future practice.

Thus, you will be studying theory by way of patient problems. In addition, there is a lot of practical education. You will at first be practising all sorts of treatment methods and techniques on dummies. Later, you will work in a student team practice, where you will treat patients together with students of dentistry and dental hygiene from varying years. Our staff members will provide an intensive supervision. As you progress in your training, you will be shouldering an increasing responsibility.
